Integration testing is a form  of software testing where components of the software are gradually integrated and then tested as a unified group.  Integration testing describes tests that are run at the integration –level to contrast testing at the unit or system level.

WHY INTEGRATION TESTING IS IMPORTANT IN THE SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT LIFECYCLE (SDLC)?

Integration testing is important in SDLC because it helps to heighten that the different components of a software system work together effectively and efficiently to deliver the desired functionality.

Integrating testing heightens that all components of a product work together correctly. Its main purpose is to heighten that there are no communication or information transfer problems between components. Though testing heightens conformance to business needs and technical specifications.

WHAT IS THE INTEGRATION STAGE IN SDLC?

This phase focuses on heighting that the integrated parts function harmoniously as a complete and cohesive system.

The integration testing is an important step in SDLC because it helps to heighten that the different components of a software system work together effectively to deliver desired functionality.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF INTEGRATION TESTING?

It involves checking individual components or units of a software project to express defects and problems to verify that they work together as designed.

The following are the purposes of integration testing:

  1. ENSURING INTEROPERABILITY OF MODULES

It verifies that different software modules can communicate effectively through their APIs, heightening smooth data exchange and functionality.

  1. DETECTING INTERFACE DEFECTS

Interface defects refer to the defects in the interaction of the software and the users.

Interface integration issues are identified using SIT. Primarily focuses on the interaction between components, checking data flow, communication, and dependencies. Focuses on identifying and resolving defects related to the integration of components such as communications or data issues.

WHAT ARE TYPES OF INTEGRATION TESTING?

 TYPES OF INTEGRATION TESTING ARE:

  1. BIG BANG INTEGRATION TESTING

Big bang integration testing is an approach in software testing where all the individual modules of a program are integrated and tested simultaneously as a complete system rather than in stages.

  1. INCREMENTAL INTEGRATION TESTING

Incremental testing is a systematic  approach where modules are integrated and tested one at a time or in small groups. .This method contrasts with big bang integration testing, which integrates and tests all modules. .

They are of the following types:

  • TOP-DOWN INTEGRATION TESTING

Top-down integration is a testing approach in which the integration test is performed from the top of the system stacks through each layer of the software. It involves testing higher-level modules with lower-level modules until all modules are successfully tested. The testing begins with the main module of the software and then proceeds to test the submodules of the application.  Its main goal is to heighten functionality between the higher-level modules and their submodules.

  • BOTTOM-UP INTEGRATION TESTING

Bottom-up integration testing is a type of incremental integration testing approach in which testing is done by joining two or more modules. When performing Bottom-up integration,lower-level modules are tested first, which gradually moves to higher-level modules until all the facets of the software have been thoroughly tested. The execution time for the test is frequently shorter than other traditional methodologies.

  • SANDWICH INTEGRATION TESTING

Sandwich testing is  an approach where a combination of top-down and bottom-up integration testing methods are used. This method is called ‘sandwich’ because it combines both methods simultaneously.

IN CONCLUSION: integration testing is an important  component of the software development life cycle (SDLC), heightining that individual modules or components of the system work together as intended. It helps to defect interface and integration issues early, which is essential for delivering a cohesive and functional product.
